Sedation
Conscious sedation is a type of anaesthesia performed on people requiring a minor surgical procedure. It consists of a drug-induced state of decreased consciousness in which the patient responds appropriately to commands alone or accompanied by mild tactile stimulation.
The drugs administered for sedation induce a relaxed and calm state of mind, and the patient is comfortable and cooperative.
The patient will feel the effects almost immediately. Breathing and blood pressure will be slightly reduced and the specialist will monitor the patient throughout the procedure to keep them stabilised.
It is a very safe procedure and surgery as the process is monitored at all times with elements such as electrocardiogram, pulse oximeter and blood pressure. This makes the surgery much safer for everyone.
It is introduced intravenously, but in certain cases, such as children, induction is by inhalation. Sedation and intravenous medication such as analgesics, antibiotics and corticoids will make the postoperative period much better. Since this type of treatment allows the patient to recover quickly and return to normal life shortly after the operation.
In which cases is conscious sedation indicated?
What are the advantages of conscious sedation for the patient?
- You will be relaxed and comfortable during surgery.
- Total absence of pain.
- You will not remember the surgery, or will remember it more vaguely.
- Your vital signs will be monitored at all times by an anaesthesiologist.
- You will have a better postoperative period, as you can be given intravenous anti-inflammatory drugs, which are much more effective and will reduce pain and inflammation.
- Awakening is immediate. Patients begin to regain consciousness when the sedated state begins to be reversed, with the use of antagonist drugs.
To carry out this process we count on Anexión, a professional team of anaesthesiologists who, by means of a previous online form, can carry out a preoperative study to check that everything is perfect at the time of the surgery.
